The story
The Green Knight has to tell is one that seem quite familiar at first but few minutes into this movie I realized it's a curious tale which I'm not familiar with(permit me to use the word curious in this situation.) It's familiar in the sense that it is based on the well known Arthurian Legend and it tells a tale of Sir Gawain, King Arthur's nephew and a Knight of the Round Table. However, in this movie Gawain is yet to become a knight of the Round Table. The tale this movie is about to tell is a version of how earned is knighthood and became a member of the roundtable.
By trying to pay attention to every single detail in this movie. The onscreen title of this movie is 'Sir Gawain and The Green Knight' (a Chivalric Romance). So I took my time to google up these sets of words and find out what it meant and here it is in quote.
'Chivalric romance is a type of prose or verse narrative that was popular in the aristocratic circles of High Medieval and Early Modern Europe. They typically describe the adventures of quest-seeking, legendary knights who are portrayed as having heroic qualities. Chivalric romances celebrate an idealized code of civilized behavior that combines loyalty, honor, and courtly love.'
The whole plot of this movie revolves around a journey embarked on by Sir Gawain to test his courage and face The Green Knight. If you're like me and haven't read or heard about the 14-century poem this movie is based on. Well, we're here to experience it for the first time.
The Green Knight is two hours long and divided into different acts. Each of them marks different point in thw story and Sir Gawain's journey to the Green chapel. Speaking of Sir Gawain. The character is played by Dev Patel and if I may say. He does a fantastic job of bringing this story alive. This movie is not only brought to live by the various actors and actresses involved but also the overall feeling of the movie through its locations, atmosphere and visual effects. Through the two hours run time I felt drawn in and I was ready to experience and discover what comes next on Sir Gawain's journey. Hopefully, when you watch this movie you guys feel the same way too.
If I had watched
The Green Knight while growing up as a teenager. It’s a kind of movie I would
have called an uninteresting bore of a movie because all I ever wanted to see
as a teenager is an action movie with good guys beating up the bad guys. As an adult now, one would realize that there is more to entertainment
than watching action movies with a lot of fight scenes. If you're looking for a medieval movie with politics, war and sword fight scenes. Well, I will say The Green Knight is not the movie you're looking for because all of that is not here. For me this movie is a different kind of experience. It gave me a nostalgic feeling of my undergraduate days where we had to study different literature time periods as coursework and also study them for tests and exams. This time around I'm experiencing this medieval story purely for entertainment and in my opinion it was worth it.
The Green Knight is not going to be for everybody. That's a clear fact but for those who appreciate the art of a good literature and a compelling literary material adaptation to a movie. I will say give this movie a try. Have you seen The Green Knight? What did you think of Sir Gawain's visions in the last minutes of this movie? I will like to hear your thought on this.
I'm going to try this one for sure. I'm in for some nostalgic feeling.
