What Made Extraction A Big Deal?
Extraction 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2020 hit film, is set to release on Netflix in just a few days. As we gear up for its arrival, let's take a closer look at what made the first movie such a big deal and why there is massive hype surrounding its successor. If you're yet to see the first movie, you can still catch up with it on Netflix or you can just binge-watch the two movies later.
In the original Extraction, released on Netflix last year, Chris Hemsworth took on the role of Tyler Rake, a skilled mercenary on a mission to rescue the son of a notorious drug lord amidst a dangerous drug war in Bangladesh. While the plot itself was fairly straightforward, it was the film's exceptional cinematography, impressive acting, and thrilling action sequences that truly captivated audiences.
One of the key factors that contributed to the movie's popularity was its release during the infamous year of 2020, when many people found themselves with ample free time to consume content on streaming platforms. Despite not being shown in theaters, Extraction became the most-watched film on Netflix in 2020, amassing a staggering 99 million views in its first month alone.
Of course, having Chris Hemsworth as the lead actor added to the movie's allure. His star power drew in audiences and piqued their curiosity to witness his portrayal of Tyler Rake.
Furthermore, Extraction arrived on the scene after the successful John Wick films had already paved the way for a new era of action movies. The John Wick series ushered in what I’ll like to call the John Wick Renaissance. The movies showcased intense and realistic action sequences, incorporating elements like fatigue during combat, limited ammunition, and gritty hand-to-hand combat. Extraction followed suit, delivering action scenes that were both exhilarating and grounded in realism. Notably, the film boasted a 12-minute continuous action sequence, which further intensified the viewing experience.
With the stage now set for Extraction 2, fans are eagerly awaiting its release this Friday. I have a good feeling it’s going to be bigger and better. As we anticipate its arrival, stay tuned for my upcoming review of the film, where I'll delve deeper into its merits and whether it lives up to the hype.
