THE CONJURING 3: THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT
I'm not even sure where to start with this review but let's start with The Conjuring franchise itself. The first 'The Conjuring' movie came out in 2013, since then we've got a sequel and a number of movies in it's shared universe, Annabelle, The Curse of Llrona and The Nun but we're not here to talk about those ones today. 'The Conjuring' is a horror movie that falls into the supernatural/paranormal sub-genre of horror. Its first release in 2013 saw a big success at the box office in terms of earnings and positive reviews among critics including its sequel The Conjuring 2. It's 2021 and we've got the third installment, The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It.
The plot follows paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorainne Warren trying to solve the mystery behind one of their exorcism that went wrong after the demon they're supposed to exorcise transferred from it initial host, David, a young boy, to another host, Arne. The duo is also faced with the challenge of proving the innocence of Arne, who happened to stab someone 22 times with the plea of demonic possession in court.
One thing that felt missing in the build of this movie by the time I was done is the court case. I would have loved to see the court proceedings but they were left out and the focus was more on the solving the mystery in their new case. It would have been interesting to see how they try to convince the jury about the demonic possession in defense of Arne; after all the subtitle says 'The Devil Made Me Do It'. It is also understandable that the franchise is not a movie based on legal tropes, hence, that's why that part was left out.
The Conjuring 3 takes a slight different approach from its predecessors by switching a staple of the franchise which I will prefer not to spoil for you guys. This switch is what makes this entry sort of okay for me as the usual demonic possession story was starting to get boring. There were also freaky moments in this movie. While it might not feel all that scary for some audience, it might be uncomforting to watch some audience; I guess this factor checks the horror element.
The runtime is about 1 hour 50 minutes long and it managed to keep me engaged through out the runtime. The duo actor and actress who has been acting the roles of Ed and Lorraine still reprise their role and they're great acts. After two movies Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have grown into playing the characters naturally, you feel like they're the real people the story is modelled after and they keep the audience engaged with their chemistry.
Overall, The Conjuring 3 is an okay horror movie in my opinion, It's not a bad movie but I didn't get blow away either. With the whole franchise getting crowded with this third movie I hope they put an end to its run before it gets stale. If you're a horror fan, you should check out this movie.
