SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW

So, the last SAW movie came out in 2017, 'Jigsaw' and 'Spiral' will be ninth installment in the franchise. For anyone familiar with the SAW franchise, you know what to expect. People get kidnapped because of their negative actions, and they're made to play a death game to save themselves, this usually leads to bodily mutilations and most of the time, their gruesome death when they try to escape these traps; classic SAW right? The audience is treated to that in the opening scene of this movie.
The plot follows Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks played by Chris Rock and his rookie partner, Emerson take charge of an investigation into grisly murders of officers in their police department. It didn't take long before Zeke realise there a is pattern to the murders and he is at the centre of it to solve them. This installment takes place in the same universe as the previous saw movie and it's not a departure. Jigsaw is referenced a number of times, and the new killer is presumed to be a copycat.
It's not everyday you get to see an actor well known for his comical roles in movies but here we are in 202, Chris Rock taking a lead role in a movie franchise known it's violent, dark and twisted plots(Love to see it). Occasionally we see him do what Chris Rock does best by inputting comic relief into some scenes and always the talkative character; his character gives life to this movie to an extent.
The motive of this installment might have been to bring back the SAW experience to the mainstream but by the end of the movie. It still relied on the same old formula that was barely working anymore. Not like it's a bad movie. For me, 'Spiral' is just another installment in the SAW franchise that has refused to distinguish itself from the rest by any mile. It's a not a miss either, fans of previous SAW movies will be glad to see how brutal the traps in the death games are in this installment. While I'm not a die hard fan of SAW movies. What I can tell you is that this installment stay true to what makes a SAW movies checklist— You've got blood, gore, traps, death and puzzles.
'Spiral' is 1 hour 30 minutes long and it's for the best it didn't drag long than necessary. I'll rate this movie to be one of the average tier movies we've had so far in this year. Hopefully, the next SAW movie will give the franchise a fresh reimagining that will get the horror movie audience talking about the cult classic again; 'Spiral' is just not that movie.

P.S.:
There are so many movies getting average rating on our platform lately, you might consider checking out our review on 'Wrath of Man'.
