MORTAL KOMBAT (2021)
After seeing 'Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge' in 2020 I totally forgot there was a reboot of the original Mortal Kombat in the works. By the way, if you haven't seen 'MK: Scorpion's Revenge', I recommend you go see it. It's a fantastic anime.
So here we are again, another classic reboot in 2021. 26 years after the first 'Mortal Kombat' movie we have a reboot(The first 'Mortal Kombat' movie was released in 1995.) At this point, some of the older generation that experienced the original movies are really getting tired of Hollywood's reboot; at least I am.
Going into this movie, I had no expectations because I found myself asking if this reboot is necessary. Is it fan requested or just a way to make money off the franchise name? For someone familiar with the Mortal Kombat universe. It's really fascinating to me on how the story of the video game had evolved over the year from 'Mortal Kombat 1' to 'Mortal Kombat 11'. It's only normal to feel this way about the reboot at this point. The only benefit of doubt I gave the movie was maybe they have a franchise planned for the future considering how well the movie might be received by critics and fans alike and most importantly the box office performance.
The Mortal Kombat's core plot has changed in this movie. The usual tournament that is fought between realms to decide the fate
of their world and all of that; you know the drill.
Some changes are made to the plot. New characters are introduced, some are removed and familiar old faces are still present; Liu Kang, Sonya, Kano and Jax; to a name a few.
I will say it's really a huge gamble to for them to introduce a new character that can't be found in any of the Mortal Kombat movies and video game. Cole Young is the new character, a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi(Scorpion). When steps like this are made by movie makers, they will always have their fingers crossed if the character will be well received. Personally, Cole Young is not a horrible addition. If there is going to be a franchise, I will like to see how he evolves before we can make a better opinion and who knows he might even be added to the video game if he does well enough among fans.
Johnny Cage's comic relief is substituted for Kano. Johnny cage is always that character that make wise crack and reduce tension with his jokes. In this reboot, Kano is the source of comic relief; not a bad approach.
We can't also leave out what made this franchise popular. Violence, blood, gore and fatalities. This movie checks all that list and the CGI is really good. A department where the original movie really lacked. Also, the famous one liners are included in this movie; be on the look out when you get to watch.
'Mortal Kombat' is 1 hour 50 minutes(plus the credit) long. The movie didn't stray away from the original concept, and I love that about it. Overall, I will say Mortal Kombat (2021) is an entertaining watch. I hope a franchise is developed from here on out especially with it's ending. So that in another 15 years times we won't be having another reboot of same Mortal Kombat again.
P.S.:
Scorpion's entrance at the end was not that impressive for me. I really thought he was going to emerge from a portal from hell or something. He just came out of nowhere with a 'get over' one liner. His custome can't really say much about it. It was just on a meh side. You'll notice absence of Shao Khan in this movie maybe they're saving him for the next movie. Who knows?
Just an afterthought, I won't be surprised if 'Street Fighter' reboot is coming out soon.
