OJUKOKORO (GREED)
'Ojukokoro' is listed to have been released in 2016, not until now I didn't know the movie existed till it got listed on Netflix this month. I guess Netflix Nigeria is really helping a lot of movies gain more visibility. Let's get into this one.
'Ojukokoro' is about the story of a broke young man, Andrew, who is also a manager of a petrol station where shady dealings happen. One day, Andrew decides to rob his employer of his money. While his plans start to unfold, he finds out that he is not the only one planning a heist.
'Ojukokoro' is about 1 hour 50 minutes long and divided into different chapters. The plot is not exactly a simple one because there are about 3 different plots happening, and they are connected. The best way to describe what is happening in this movie is with the Yoruba dialect saying that goes 'Ole ji ole gba'; multiple thieves trying to steal from another thief.
The comedy in this movie is not over exaggerated like it's done in some Nigerian movies. They're kept in check. Which is a really good thing. You will also be familiar with some of the cast as I'm not an ardent Nigeria movie fan, I could recognise one or two familiar faces.
There is the issue of shaky camera in some scenes. No, it's not a technique in this case. Shaky camera could be used as a technique to create a feel by filmmakers. Some scenes where it occurred made it feel like a low quality experience for me. Other issue I had by the time I finished the movie was how the story was was not really fleshed out. Some things were resolved but never hit that home run feeling by the time it came full circle.
Finally, 'Ojukokoro' for me is just an average movie but we have to give the crew behind it some credits for their creative efforts. I will love to see more movies from the writer and directors.
