30 COINS

Dark, twisted and terrifying, these are the perfect words I can use to describe this tv show. The spanish movie industry has really got something good with this one on horror genre. Trust me it's like nothing you've seen before. It's also by HBO(Europe), I'm not exactly surprised it's this good. Just like 'Sweet Home' this show also came out last year and it went under the radar unnoticed.
Moving to the plot of this movie. It's a very simple one that gets complicated as the show progresses. Father Vergara, an exorcist(also a boxer) is exiled to a remote town in Spain, after one of his exorcism ends in tragedy. Not long after he arrives, paranormal occurrences starts happening all over the town. Alongside the town's mayor, Paco and Vet, Elena they try to deal with these paranormal occurrences but there is more to it than the duo bargained for.
Season one is eight episodes long with each episode about one hour. Trust me, the opening sequence in episode one is enough to get you hooked on this series and the rest of the episodes doesn't disappoint. They've got nice a twist and creepy stuff brewing up you won't see coming or probably haven't seen before. I have to mention that the build-up of events depending on how you see it, is very slow; this wasn't an issue for me.
Expect some complicated storytelling, when the mystery starts to unfold there was many stuff to unpack and digest. Something good I noticed was absence of jumpscares. An element that has really suffered in horror movies from being overused. There are no jumpscares in this show but expect some serious blood, gore and 'WTFs'.
With some of the good stuff out of the way, one of the issues I have with this show is it's presentation of time jumps. The jumps were oddly presented and you might not notice it until a character mentions it to inform the audience. Which made these jumps less desirable when they occur; this issue was further backed up in episode 8.
The climax feels rushed and I was left in profound confusion by the time the credits roll with a lot to process and digest. The cliffhanger at the end in my opinion was somewhat weak, it lacked a "going out with a bang." All thanks to the rushed finale it's difficult to tell if this show will be returning for a second season.
When shows/movies on a budget stay within their budget means. The CGI don't usually suffer but once they try to do something large scale it shows. In '30 Coins' it's a mix of both and the later happens in episode 8(it's not a deal breaker.)
'30 Coins' is a show that will definitely that not be for everyone as there are some subject some people might view to be controversial or offensive but hey, I'm only here for entertainment and if you're also seeking fresh entertainment from the horror genre, you should definitely check it out.
