I CARE A LOT
'I Care A Lot' is a movie about a con legal guardian that preys on old people by taking advantage of them with their health. She gets them locked up in an old people's home where its staff are in on her scam. Proceeds to profits off these people's property by selling and auctioning them. She was on a good streak doing this till she makes her next victim Jennifer Peterson, an old woman with ties to the Russian mob.
I'll try to go as easy as I can on this movie but first, setting aside the hype behind this movie. 'I Care A Lot' started out well, it has got a good premise and I enjoyed its first half. I also liked the initial cat and mouse play between Marla and Lunyov. I would have actually love to see more of this but we all know that is always not going to last long because the whole plot went into a deep mess after that.
Before we get into the uglies of this movie one just have to appreciate how beautifully colored this movie is, also the wardrobe styling of Marla; the stylist did a fantastic job. Rosamund Pike's acting was spot on as you can't help but feel disgusted by her character. Peter Dinklage, on the other hand was just there for the ride; Pike's performance carries most of the interesting part of this movie.
Now to the issues I have with this movie, I get the point that the character Marla is ruthless and really know her onions this was beautifully established but for someone really smart, you'd be surprised the kind of stupid decisions she makes and it begs to ask the questions like if the plot is just trying to play way too smart or it's a confused mess.
When this movie tries to be smarter than it is, that is when its plot starts to crumble. This movie wants you to believe a con artist can take on a Russian mob boss by herself. Trying to figure out if this is supposed to be a form of a joke or satire. For me it's none! Marla is not John Wick for goodness sake but hold on there is more.
The plot armor in this movie is a thick one especially when Marla goes up against the Russian mob boss. By movie standard and realism, Marla would have been dead 40 minutes into this movie. The worst of it all is when she survives a certain death sequence and suddenly becomes Sam Fisher, tracks down Lunyov and deals with him. At this point in the movie, I lost any form of interest.
The plot armor is so bad that it makes a Russian mob boss look like childs play. It's more believable if this movie was a comedy but it doesn't present itself as comedy. Lunyov is supposed to be this ruthless Russian mob boss and you can tell when he's first introduced. Lunyov did some ruthless stuff, then he instantly went from like level ten ruthlessness to level one. I have no further comments on this.
There was some cringy stuff about the gender war going on in this movie, maybe it's supposed to be a satire. I'm not really sure. It was just too cringy when the characters made snarky remark; the whole time I was like 'was that really necessary?' For a moment, this movie feels like it was trying to pass across some kind of 'Girl Power' theme and message. The issue is that it doesn't deliver on it positively.
By the end of this movie, its conclusion (without spoiling it) was supposed to be satisfying to watch but it was just meh to me. Such ending is always inevitable if not for the almighty plot armor.
Will I recommend this movie for you? I can't say, for me it's just an overhyped average movie but you might find amusing depending on your level of enthusiasm in a good plot.
P.S.: If you check this movie online for rating. It has got really high ratings. Looking back on the whole 1 hour 50 minutes of watching the movie I guess the actor's performances were used for the high rating and not by plot.

I totally agree with the part about Rosamund Pike's acting being so spot on that you can't help but feel disgusted by the character. How can one be so evil? I also noticed her "hate for men". I mean who wouldn't?
ReplyDeletePeter Dinklage's character seemed to be tied down and couldn't exactly draw attention to himself by using that more brutal means to get his what he wanted so that might be why she had a chance against the Russian mob boss.
Good review.
